The first night of your adventure begins in Winnipeg and ‘The Forks’ where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers meet, a 6,000-year-old gather- ing place for Indigenous people and, later, fur traders. Visit the Fork’s Market, a new meeting place, transformed from an abandoned rail yard into Winnipeg’s foremost unique shopping and cultural destination.
The following morning, board your flight destined to the edge of the Arctic and the seaside village of Churchill where three major and unique biomes meet – tundra, marine and boreal forest. Population: 60,000 Beluga Whales, 1,000 Polar Bears and 850 people.
On arrival, and after a delicious lunch at our award-winning Lazy Bear Café, you’ll journey north by boat or helicopter (weather/tide dependent) to our Hudson Bay Wilderness Outpost, moored at Hubbart Point, and gateway to the stunningly-beautiful and mysterious ‘Fireweed Island’. On the way, watch for polar bears along the coast and pods of beluga whales in the bay.
Fireweed Island is the only place in the world where you can see and photograph Polar Bears surrounded by Fireweed – stunningly beautiful, purple wildflowers. This unique biological combination results from warmer onshore westward-flowing air providing the necessary warmth for Fireweed, seaside Chamomile and other flora to flourish while the icy, Arctic waters of Hudson Bay provide perfect climate conditions for Polar Bears.
Next, board our outpost surrounded by this awe-inspiring northern wilderness largely untouched by human existence. Land and sea, Polar Bears, Beluga Whales, Arctic Terns, Arctic Sik-Sik and more are yours to discover. Whether you explore daily on foot or boat along the coast is up to you, but your experience is sure to be life-changing. Each expedition to the Hudson Bay Wilderness Outpost comes with Lazy Bear Expeditions guide/bear guard for your safety.
A final adventure-filled morning and return to Winnipeg will end your sub-Arctic tour, but your unforgettable memories will never end.
